4 Night Tour- Oban, Arisaig, Skye and Glencoe

Day 1

From Four Seasons Campers head north on the A82 up the west side of Loch Lomond.  At Tarbet take the A83 towards Inverary and continue to Lochgilphead. Next, take the B841 towards Crinan then head north through Kilmartin Glen to Ardfern.

Things to see and do

  • Stop at pretty village of Luss on Loch Lomond
  • Visit the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar
  • Visit Inverary Castle
  • Lunch at The George Hotel, Inverary
  • Visit Crinan and watch the yachts come through the Crinan Canal
  • Lunch option at Crinan Hotel overlooking Corryvrekan whirlpool
  • Visit Kilmartin Museum
  • Visit Neolithic stones along Kilmartin Glen
  • Dinner at Tayvallich Inn – great seafood overlooking Loch Sween

Camping

Ardfern – basic campsite with toilet and kitchen with great views over loch.  Honesty box for payment

Day 2

From Ardfern drive north onto the A816 to Oban.  From Oban take the A85 and go over Connel bridge onto the A828.  At Appin head west to Port Appin for lunch and walk then back to A828 and onto A82 at South Ballahulish and head north on A82 up through Fort William to Arisaig.

Things to see and do

  • Visit MacCaigs Tower in Oban
  • Watch the ferries go in and out of Oban Harbour
  • Lunch at The Pierhouse Hotel at Port Appin
  • Walk around the headland at Port Appin
  • Hire bikes and cycle over to Lismore Island opposite Port Appin
  • Stop at Loch Leven Seafood Café Stop http://www.lochlevenseafoodcafe.co.uk/ for seafood (highly recommended by other customers!)   by Ballahulish Bridge for amazing oysters, scallops and langoustines
  • Neptunes Staircase  is a series of canal locks that link the Caledonian Canal to the open sea and  is well worth a visit.   At this time of year you should spot some beautiful Scandinavian yachts coming through the canal on their way to the beautiful West Coast and Inner Hebrides.
  • Glenfinnan Monument erected in memory of Jacobite rising and men who fought for Prince Charlie’s cause and the Glenfinnan Viaduct – a great engineering construction
  • Jacobite West Highland Line made famous in the Harry Potter films by Hogwarts Express
  • Beautiful white beaches at Arisaig

Day 3

From Arisaig head 4 miles north to Mallaig where you can get a ferry over to the Isle of Skye.  The ferry to Skye takes you to Armadale.  Take road north to Broadford, Slighlachan and then head west along the A863 then B8009 and south towards Glenbrittle and camp here or continue north towards Loch Greshornish, Dunvegan and Point of Neist.

Things to see and do

  • Talisker Whisky Distillery which does fantastic tours http://www.nickscape.co.uk/isle-of-skye-photography-locations 
  • A walk to the Fairy Pools which are located along the road from Merkadale to Glenbrittle  is highly recommended.  The walk starts at the Forestry Commision carpark signposted   ‘Blumagan Na Sithichean.’
  • Visit Dunvegan Castle – lovely walks and gardens
  • Eat at Edinbane Inn (live music twice a week in summer and excellent food) near Loch Greshornish
  • Visit Edinbane Pottery
  • Walk around Neist Point and Lighthouse https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/neistpoint.shtml
  • Visit pretty town of Portree – great fish and chip shop

Day 4

Drive south over the Skye bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh and take the A87 to Invergarry and then onto A82 to Fort William and Glencoe.

Things to see and do

  • Visit Eilean Donan Castle
  • Visit pretty town of Plockton with it’s palm trees and have lunch at one of many restaurants
  • Head south from Glen Sheil towards Glenelg and visit the ancient celtic Brochs
  • Eat lunch at Glenelg Inn
  • Stop to eat at Cluanie Inn and enjoy views of 5 Sisters of Kintail mountain ridge
  • At Invergarry head north to visit Loch Ness and pretty village of Fort Augustus and watch boats come through the locks of the Caledonian Canal
  • Dinner at Clachaig Inn (one mile from Red Squirrel Campsite Glencoe)
  • Dinner at Glencoe Gathering (opposite Invercoe Campsite)
