Best Dog Walks Scotland

dog walk through woods for best dog walks scotland

Our favourite dog walks around Scotland

Where do we begin? There are so many amazing walks around Scotland, it’s difficult to know where to start and even harder to decide which are the best dog walks! If you, like us, enjoy giving your dogs the freedom to explore and roam then we would recommend the following dog walks in Scotland:

Black Labrador surrounded by bluebells in a lovely medow
Sandwood Bay with sandy beaches and clear blue water and sky blue skies

Sandwood Bay

Sandwood Bay in Sutherland is an incredible walk which both you and your dog will love!  A 4 mile walk-in, the long flat walk is well worth the effort. It’s a memory to treasure forever, as you hear the crashing of the waves on the approach and walk past the ruined cottages before descending over the sand dunes to the most beautiful 2 mile long white sandy beach. In the distance you will see Am Buchaille, the famous 65m sea stack will appear in the distance as you walk towards the south end of the beach.

Loch An Eilean

Loch an Eilean by Rothiemurchus near Aviemore has a lovely 4 mile circular walk around this beautiful loch.  Enjoy the canopies of the stunning Caledonian Pine trees as you gaze out on the castle at the centre of the loch.  And make sure you shout across the water to hear your echo respond seconds later!

Stronachlachar

Stronachlacharby Loch Katrine in the beautiful Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park offers an escape from the crowds. 13 miles from the head of the loch which has parking and a cafe, you can take the steam boat back down the loch to your starting point. If your dog is feeling super fit, you can hire bikes at the east end of the loch and cycle around to Stronachlachar. at the other end of the loch.

Achmelvic to Lochinver

Achmelvich to Lochinver is a lovely walk across the headland from the stunning white beaches at Achmelvich (where there is a campsite but it isn’t dog-friendly), across the rock strewn hill and lochans, and down to the little fishing port of Lochinver.  At 5 miles, its a lovely walk for all the family and you can all treat yourself to a pie at the infamous Lochinver Larder where there are at least 30 different pies!

Sutherlands grove

Sutherland Grove

Sutherland Grove is north of Oban and a delightfully mystical woodland. As well as being an amazing dog-friendly walk, it is also a fantastic place for mushroom foraging if you go there at the right time of year.   The Pier House at Port Appin is close by for a well deserved bowl of soup or delicious seafood afterwards. You can sit outside with your dog looking across to the island of Lismore . Then after lunch take a meander around the headland for the second walk of the day. Absolute bliss!
