Day 1

Head from Four Seasons Campers to Drymen then through to Balmaha and Millarrochy Bay, on the east side of Loch Lomond.

Things to see and do

  • Eat dinner at Oak Tree Inn at Balmaha
  • Climb Conic Hill at Balmaha or enjoy one of the many forest and loch side walks

Day 2

 

From Loch Lomond drive north on the A82 (up the west side of the Loch).  At Tarbet take the A83 towards Inverary then A819 to Dalmally then A85 to Tyndrum and A82 up through Glencoe to Ballahulish Bridge then head south towards Oban Camping and Caravan Club site which is on banks of Loch Creran near Port Appin.

Day 3

Get ferry from Oban to Mull and head west to visit Iona.  Either camp at Fionnphort or head north to Calgary Bay for wild camping and visit pretty town of Tobermory.

Things to see and do

  • Visit Macaigs Tower in Oban
  • Visit The Mishnish – a well- known yachting stop with live music. 
  • There are some nice walks over the hill from Tobermory which loop round and back down. 
  • Visit beach Calgary Bay
  • Look out for Sea Eagles which are numerous on Mull
  • Visit Iona

 Day 4 

Take ferry from Tobermory to Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula and either head up through Glenuig to Lochailort and onto road to isles or alternatively go the longer route up by Strontian and join it at Kinlocheil.

Things to see and do     

  • Visit the stunning white beaches near Kilchoan at Sanna Bay
  • Visit Ardnamurchan Distillery
  • Visit Neptunes Staircase by Fort William – a series of canal locks that link the Caledonian Canal to the open sea and is well worth a visit.   At this time of year you should spot some beautiful Scandinavian yachts coming through the canal on their way to West Coast and Inner Hebrides.
  • Visit Glenfinnan Monument erected in memory of Jacobite rising and men who fought for Prince Charlie’s cause and the Glenfinnan Viaduct – a great engineering construction
  • Jacobite West Highland Line made famous in the Harry Potter films by Hogwarts Express.  Runs from Fort William to Mallaig. Book now to ensure you get a ticket as gets very booked up!
  • Visit white beaches at Arisaig made famous in film ‘Local Hero’

Day 5

From Arisaig continue onto the fishing port of Mallaig where you can get the ferry to Skye.  The campervan is charged as a car so it is not expensive- it is 4.9m for booking.  Book in advance.  Head north and either camp at Glenbrittle on west side of Skye and visit Talkisker and Fairy Pools or head north

Day 6 

 

Head south through Portree then over to Eilean Donan Castle on mainland.  You can then either take the A890 towards Wester Ross or take a slight detour north after the bridge round to Plockton which is a really pretty seaside village with palm trees and some great pubs.  Continue round the coast to Applecross going over the Bealach na ba if you’re brave enough!  It’s a windy mountain road but is absolutely fine for VW Campervans, a bit more hairy in a larger motorhome! There is an alternative lower and longer route via Sheildaig.

Things to see and do:

  • Visit the colourful town of Portree on Skye
  • Visit Eilean Donan Castle
  • Stop for lunch at Plockton
  • Coral Beaches by Applecross – 50 minute walk from car park and well worth it!
  • Supper at Applecross Inn….not to be missed…amazing seafood and atmosphere!

Day 7 

Continue north to Shieldaig and onto Torridon then head east to Kinlochewe and north up the A832 along Loch Maree and onto Gairloch where there are some great beaches to stop at.  Then continue round the coast to Dundonnell and onto the A835 to Ullapool for some lively music, great pubs and fantastic fish and chips!

Day 8 

From Ullapool head north towards Lochinver, past Ardvreck Castle at Loch Assynt and continue to Lochinver and Achmelvic.  Take detour over to Achiltibuie which overlooks the summer isles

Things to see and do:

  • Ardmair Point and Lighthouse north of Ullapool for walk
  • Stac Pollaidh for small mountainous hill walk with stunning views over Inverpolly
  • Stop at Knockan Crag National Nature reserve between Ullapool and Achmelvic to view the rock formations – this is part of the North West Geopark rock route showing the story of how Scotland was formed
  • Stop at Ardvreck Castle on shores of Loch Assynt and wander around the ruins
  • You have to try the Lochinver pies from the range of over 30 pies at Lochinver Larder – sit in or take away
  • Walk over from Achmelvic to Lochinver (approx. 5 miles easy walk around coast)
  • Visit Lochinver Pottery either at Lochinver or Ullapool (the Ullapool shop is slightly larger)
  • Visit Achmelvic beautiful white beaches and have a swim in the shallow water

Day 9 

From Achmelvic continue north to Durness…it’s a fabulous road!

Day 10

Continue east and then south around the North Coast 500 towards Tain and Rosemarkie near Fortrose on the Black Isle.

Day 11 

Drive south towards Inverness and down the A9 towards Grantown on Spey and Aviemore.  Pass beautiful woodland scenery with lots of beautiful Caledonian Pines trees which are native to Scotland.

Things to see and do:    

  • Visit the Culloden Battle Field which is a National trust attraction and offers a great interactive and atmospheric experience.  It is located 20 minutes south east of Inverness.
  • Take a short journey to the bottom of the Funicular railway at Cairngorm mountain range.  There is a good café and access to walks at the top.
  • Loch-an-Eilean which is nearby also offers a lovely forest walk around the loch that surrounds the castle in the middle
  • Visit Braemar Castle
  • Walk at Linn of Dee near Mar Lodge
  • Crathie Castle 
  • Balmoral Castle

Day 12

Drive south from Braemar to Dundee and over the bridge to St. Andrews .  Enjoy beach and cathedral before driving south around the coast around the East Neuk of Fife which has several pretty fishing villages and continue onto Elie which is an old Victorian holiday village with beautiful beach.

Day 13 

Drive east from Elie and over the Forth Road Bridge at North Queensferry then take ring road around Edinburgh and continue east along coast and through Dunbar and down to Northumbria.

Day 14

Drive north to Edinburgh from Beadnell Bay or Melrose depending on where you have camped.  Spend day in Edinburgh then continue west from Edinburgh to Stirling and park just north of Stirling along the hillfoots overlooking The Wallace Monument.
